Tornado Season Is Here
The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and frogs are starting to croak. Spring is creeping up on us! On Monday, March 20th, we finally entered the wonderful season of spring. Warmer weather will slowly arrive–along with earlier sunrises and later sunsets. There will be a little more daylight every day until June 21st, which is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. Spring is also notorious for rainy weather, so keeping an umbrella on hand would certainly be useful during these next few months.
Rain showers are not the only type of weather that we will be seeing. Tornado season is upon us, with its peak time being during March, April, and May. Concerns of possible tornadoes were seen rather recently. To spread awareness of tornado season, here are some important safety tips to keep in mind:
Always know where the “safe place” in your house is. The best option is a basement, but if you do not have one then the middle of the house and away from windows is best.
If you are driving and a tornado spawns near you, do not get out of the vehicle! You should stay in the car with your seatbelt fastened and get below the windows, covering them with a blanket if possible.
A tornado watch means that the conditions are right for a tornado to form. There isn’t one yet, but you should keep an eye on the weather and news in case one forms. A tornado warning means there is a tornado in your area. You should seek shelter immediately.
Another very important aspect of tornado safety is to remain calm. Most likely, you will be okay. If you formulate a plan that works for you and your family on what to do in case of a tornado, then that can help alleviate some of the panic that tends to set in during severe weather. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather this spring and stay safe!
