2022 October Sky Festival
Updated: Dec 9, 2022
Every October, the town of Oliver Springs plays host to the October Sky Festival, paying tribute to the motion picture after which it is named, October Sky. I have recently had the pleasure of interviewing Teresa Hall who oversees the preparation and set up for the festival. Most of the information mentioned in this article came directly from her, so I would like to thank her for her time and all the work she puts towards the esteemed festival. The movie was filmed in and around Oliver Springs during 1998; consequently, the town enjoys celebrating the film through this event. The first celebration was held in 2007 and has occurred for 15 years since its inception, “rain or shine,” as Teresa mentioned in our interview.
About 4,000 people attend the festival each year, and for good reason. It features around 100 vendors in total including: crafters, exhibitors, live entertainment, and all kinds of food a person could imagine. There is something for everyone who takes part, and there is no way anybody could leave downcast.
This year was Teresa’s fifth year organizing the festival, and she says, “I do enjoy the festival. It’s a lot of work, year round. I like meeting the vendors, making sure things are running smoothly, and seeing such a crowd. It’s amazing.”
