A member of our newspaper staff recently had the opportunity to speak to Gwen Johnson, a very important Oliver Springs alumna. During her time at Oliver Springs High School, she was a part of the girl's basketball team, the National Beta Club, and the marching band. In the interview, she says that attending football games was her favorite activity because she got to support her brother and spend time with her friends. Gwen was even voted Most School Spirit in her senior year of high school. Having graduated in 1973, she was a teacher for several years at Oliver Springs Elementary School. She went on to be the OSES assistant principal in 1995 while coaching the Oliver Springs High School girls team. Mrs. Johnson ended her career as the principal of Dyllis Springs Elementary in 2015. She states that she really enjoyed being around kids. As of right now, she is the coach of the Oliver Springs Middle School girls basketball team. The advice she gave to the current students would be to enjoy their childhood because life gets really tough afterward, and stay as far away from drugs as you can.
