Breast Cancer Awareness Month

What even is breast cancer? That’s the most common question asked among those unfamiliar with the disease. Breast cancer normally occurs in women but rarely in men. The symptoms that would be considered breast cancer are: a lump in the breast, and changes in the shape or even texture of the breast or nipple.

So, why do we have a month about it? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s an annual campaign to help with the awareness of the disease. The whole purpose is to try and get as many people as possible to raise money to help with the awareness. What year did all of this start? Well it began in 1985 with former First Lady Betty Ford. She helped with the kick-off of a week-long event. As for herself, she was a survivor from breast cancer.Where did the pink ribbon for breast cancer come from? It was created by a woman who was an editor-in-chief of Self Magazine for the magazine’s second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
