National Bird Day
Updated: Feb 27, 2023
In the United States alone, there are over 800 species of birds. However, this pales in comparison to the worldwide number of about 10,000. It is theorized that the modern bird originated somewhere around 60 million years ago near the end of the Cretaceous period. Today we celebrate National Bird Day to honor the animal and spread awareness of climate change, loss of habitat, hunting, and other things that are taking the species into a steady decline around the world. It is expected that in the next century, 12% of all bird species will be extinct. So if you are a lover of birds, please take this into consideration while out hunting or even driving home after work. People celebrate the event in different ways; for example, one might go out and decide to adopt a bird of their own to care for and nurture over the years to come, or simply stay at home and enjoy a documentary starring the beautiful creatures. Next year, on January the fifth, take some time to appreciate the creatures that add a little bit of charm to your day, whether it be through their song, or the gentle flutter of wings outside your window.
