Student Spotlight: Madeline Poche

The OS Press wishes to highlight some of our remarkable students at OSHS, and for this edition we are proud to spotlight freshman Madeline Poche! She owns a business called Dixie Dogs Co. When asked why she started the business, she responded, “DDC is proudly disability-owned and operated by yours truly. It was inspired by working dogs—specifically, service dogs. Whether it’s alerting to an oncoming seizure or performing guide tasks, their brains process and regulate information in a way we can hardly comprehend. Years ago, when I saw photos and videos of service dogs sporting their gear and bandanas, I knew I wanted to create working dog gear, too! I looked through a lot of photos and videos of dogs wearing their gear, and the passion definitely struck. I have been around sewing my entire life (literally), and it wasn’t hard to get started learning how to operate a sewing machine. My products were, admittedly, terrible to start with, but it was a learning process!”

She was also asked what types of items her business produces, and she responded with: “DDC sells a multitude of handmade products. I have made service dog vests. I have made custom patch tabs and custom patches, and I love making someone’s vision come true through them! I sell many different prints of dog bandanas, ranging in size to fit the smallest Chihuahua or a Bernese Mountain Dog. My favorite bandanas are the ones I fray the edges of—they are especially favored during the colder months! I also occasionally work with macrame, and I make spiral-knotted leashes out of it. I am always learning how to make new designs, and I have some great models (my dogs) to test them out on!”
