The Return of a Bobcat Tradition

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

The Reinstitution of the OSHS Newspaper

A new year brings about many new beginnings: new classes, new teachers, new students. But one of the most anticipated (at least for us here at the newspaper) is the reinstatement of the journalism group here at Oliver Springs High School. Oliver Springs’ newspaper has gone through many iterations over the past 70 plus years. The first known newspaper was from 1948, then known as “The Bugle.” Since then, there has been at least one newspaper present per decade, with numerous names such as “The Bobcat Paper” in the 50s, “The Golden Press” in the 80s (which was a top contender for the current name of our paper), and our name at present, ”The OS Press” in the 90s. The formats also greatly varied, from traditional newspapers to newsletters. Sometime in the past 10 years, the newspaper fell out of print… until now.

The reinstatement of the newspaper was first proposed last school year by our present class advisor, Mrs. Carter, an English and drama teacher. After being approved by administration, applications for the class were then opened up, and the rest was history. We currently have a staff of 12 enthusiastic and dedicated newspaper reporters, editors, and fanatics whom of which we have self-titled “the Golden Girls.” Our ultimate goal for this paper is to be a resource for the school and community, and the voice for the students of Oliver Springs High School. We strive to bring spotlights to outstanding individuals in our community, to report on the most relevant topics facing our school today, and to inform those around us of all that is occurring in and around the school and town. Newspapers are a dying artform. By bringing this back to our school and community, we hope to keep a little bit of the tradition alive, and a tradition it truly is. It is something that unites generations, that bridges the growing gap between us. My fervent wish as editor is that, through journalism, we can establish a sense of pride in our school that is so lacking. We hope, reader, that you will join us monthly for the latest from The OS Press.

Note: it is encouraged if you have additional information about any of the past newspapers, or corrections to anything written in this article, to contact The OS Press via the school itself
