Super Bowl Recap and Controversies
The 2023 Super Bowl played the Kansas City Chiefs against Philadelphia Eagles at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Travis Kelce's opening-drive touchdown catch scored the first touchdown of the game. The Eagles held the lead until Patrick Mahomes found receiver Kadarius Toney for a walk-in 5-yard touchdown, and kicker Harrison Butker made the extra point to put Kansas City ahead 28-27 with 12:04 left in the fourth quarter. By the end, Kadarius Toney returned a punt 65 yards to help set up a Kansas City Chiefs touchdown in a 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. This victory was more than a game for the brothers playing on opposing teams. Jason and Travis Kelce celebrated with a post-game embrace still wearing rival jerseys. While being bombarded with reporters, they truly showed competition is insignificant to brotherhood.
Another astounding event of the Super Bowl was the most controversial and revolutionary advertisement that is not like any other Super Bowl commercial; it supports compassion rather than a product. The great “Commercial for Jesus” was a short clip trying to remove the toxic, stereotypical images of Christianity. The group behind the Jesus-focused ads is He Gets Us, a limited liability company that says it's an initiative of The Servant Foundation, a public charity and Christian foundation based in Kansas that last year launched a $100 million effort to improve the image of Jesus, as the Washington Post reported. While the group's donors are largely anonymous, a significant figure publicly acknowledged Hobby Lobby founder and billionaire David Green informed his family was helping fund the ads.
But that was not the only controversy. Rihanna previously protested the NFL in support of Kaepernick kneeling and not respecting a nation that oppressed minorities. This activism attempt seems to be dismissed in history because as soon as the NFL made it a part of their players contract that they either stay in the locker room or stand for the national anthem, there was no more discussion or conflict with the problem. However, after originally sitting during the anthem, Kaepernick decided to kneel instead out of respect for those who served in the military. Rihanna decided to support him by boycotting the 2018-2019 Super Bowl performance in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. This time, Rihanna has decided to perform as a representative of her community. It seems she took this new stance because, as she said in an interview for Ladbible, “It’s important for representation. It’s important for my son to see this.” She has clearly changed her mind; instead of protesting an involvement with patriotism, she has decided to redefine it from within by representing her people, culture, and community for future generations, AKA her new baby.
