The Boys Be Balling
The Oliver Springs High School Boys Basketball Team started their season off with a bang really showing off the skills of what Coach Wesley Rather has brought out in these boys. His philosophy of coaching, as he says, is outcompeting their opponent and having fun while working hard, and everything takes care of itself.
Besides basketball, he hopes to teach his players how to be decent young men that represent their community well. They have had many highs and lows so far this season, but Coach Rather believes the best is yet to come with this group. One of the highest points this year was our game against Coalfield. The Bobcats won 49-47 with a 0.2 second buzzer-beater. Kane Gouge set the screen, passed by Ethan Jones, and scored by Javen Barger. One of their star players, Javen Barger, says, “It is fun and I love the coach…. A high point would definitely be track practice… but what really makes our team great is our intensity and our defense.”
This team has a lot to live up to considering last year they made it to the sub-state game. But as their coach said, they can go all the way if they just put the round ball in the hole!
