Homecoming Football Game

On Friday September 13th, Oliver Springs football fans could be heard from a mile away. They were cheering, stomping, chanting, the marching band was blasting music, and it was probably the most exciting game of the season so far. However, down on the field it was dead silence for the players focused on one goal and one goal only: it was the big homecoming game against Oakdale, and we had to win. Now, clearly we were ready for it because we won 40-12.

The season started off rocky to say the least for the team, but in later games they really managed to turn things around; after all, they faced all of their biggest and toughest rivals in the first games. But everything fell into place and the team found their groove with a likely permanent turning point at the Oneida game. The team really started to trust the process and their coach’s judgment.

A highlight of the homecoming game would be Carson Nivens scoring a touchdown when on defense. Oakdale’s running back fumbled the ball, Caden Jackson tackled him, and Nivens saw the opportunity to take it and run. When asked about it he says, “All I could think is, don’t fall, don’t fall, don’t fall, don’t fall….” He is quite an impressive player, despite coming back from several injuries. Nivens was also nominated as WBIR defensive player of the week. When asked how he feels about it, he says, “It feels great! It feels like with all those days that I was in the gym and others weren’t, my hard work finally paid off. I have no problem getting back to it.” We definitely have some fantastic, dedicated players this year, and we will continue to follow our underdog team throughout the season.
